Filling out an application for subsidies is not the same as enrolling for coverage in the Medicare Drug Program. You must enroll directly with an approved Medicare prescription drug provider for coverage. Enrollment has begun for this new drug benefit (November 15th, 2005).

The open enrollment period in the Medicare Prescription Drug Program begins November 15, 2005, and ends May 15, 2006 for most seniors. Starting May 16, 2006, those eligible during the open enrollment period who do not register will face lifetime penalties.

Seniors with drug coverage as current employees or under an employer-retirement plan may still face penalties for failing to enroll in the Medicare plan if their current coverage is not at least as good as the Medicare plan.
